About Edinburgh EquiLearn CIC

Mission & Values

Edinburgh Equilearn is a not – for – profit Community Interest Company providing an equine assisted youth support service supporting children and young people across Edinburgh (predominantly North Edinburgh). We support children and young people from the most deprived areas providing a unique equine assisted support service as well as access to horse riding for those that are unable to do so otherwise. The aim of our group sessions is to increase the self-esteem, confidence and mental wellbeing of all participants as well as allowing them to learn new transferable skills that we hope they can carry with them through other areas of their lives into further education or employment.

The project was originally piloted in August 2022 and within just eight weeks we had received registers of interest from 56 different schools and third sector organisations supporting young people. The spaces on the programme were quickly booked right up to July 2023 and with such good feedback we were contacted by various private funding sources pledging grant funding to help expand the project.

At present we are currently working with a number of local schools, Edinburgh Council Social Services and other third sector organisations including Stepping Stones North Edinburgh and Children 1st helping to support over 35 children with a growing waiting list of 102. We continue to frequent the field at Craigcrook with small groups of children to provide our equine assisted learning sessions as well as providing access to sport with riding lessons being provided (held at other establishments) .

Our aims are :

  • To provide children and young people across Edinburgh with a unique, safe outdoor space to enjoy the natural word around them

  • To make horse riding accessible to all

  • To increase the confidence and self esteem of participants

  • To encourage young people to learn about the natural world and take positive steps towards a greener Scotland

  • To encourage children struggling with school attendance to make the first important steps to reengage in their education

With thanks to the ongoing support from our  funders KPE4, FirstPort and the National Lottery we have a very exciting year ahead for everyone involved.
